What causes a car to go into a spin?

RE: What causes a car to go into a spin?
I saw were someone said having bald back tires will cause you to spin. That is incorrect Look at Slicks or RComps They have zip tread. The only thing tread is good for, is the rain. Also yes if you go to a race track in the rain, there are many people out there one rcomps in the rain. You just have to be smooth...... But no... I ran HTR200 basically bald at Roebling. That was perfect. I had more grip, because more tire is touching the road. Think about it.... Yes my tires are going to cord soon, but they will not cause me to spin in an autocross or on the track... That is caused by throttle induced over steer, which is releasing the gas in the middle of the turn, which take pressure off the back tires and put that pressure more to the front and causes the car to rotate, OR actually grip. When the car starts to rotate you ease onto the throttle, putting the force back on the back wheels and shooting you forward. If you stay off the throttle to long, you will spin.

You will also spin if you trail brake. Which is braking and turning at the same time. Same concept as lifting in a turn except more drastic. It is great if you want to rotate the car in the direction you want to go. But if you are not familiar with your car you will spin.

However not having tread will not cause you to spin, you actually have MORE grip because there is MORE rubber touching the road. Unless you are running Rcomps or Slicks, and they are heat cycled out which means, they are now just hard pieces of rubber, almost like bricks.
Tread is only for standing water, and grass and what not.... not pavement.

Technically, bald tire are good. However, unless you had them shaved, not having tread usually indicates a tire that has been worn out chemically as well (for example, the tires on CC1 are cording and heat cycled out)

RE: What causes a car to go into a spin?
I would put 90% of spins happening from driver errors or being too aggressive. My epic spin a couple of events ago came from me planting the throttle in the carpet after understeering wide, resulting in a violent weight transfer that spun the car. Managing that transfer is the key to driving anything fast. Many things like tires and suspension bits can help, but the trick is being smooth and allowing the car to settle before you make another move. It's harder to do in autocross than on a track because you have things happening in much more frequently, but the idea holds. Zach Scott is one of the best drivers I know and I post this purely as an example. Here's an example of mismanging weight transfer

He spun my car because he tried to throw it around like his Miata which is nearly 1300 lbs lighter Lol You can drive the crap out of something and be crazy fast once and spin or mess up other times (Tyler Zellmer is the king of this Wink ) or you can be smooth and consistenly fast like Zach is when he drives his own cars. Smooth is better for consistency and you're less likely to spin.

I meant it as a compliment Big Grin You can get away with it because you are naturally gifted at car control.....I just wouldn't suggest it to newcomers or those looking for ways to improve their skills. Get consistent first....then you can pull a "Zellmer" and drive like a rabid squrriel is in the car attacking you Lol

My foot is not that heavy. I was just having fun and driving a little to fast on cold corded tires.

If you're speaking of the RA-1's, then you're wrong. Those tires have their best grip just before being corded. They're very susceptible to age, temperature damage, and UV damage.

If you're running Goodyears, Hankooks, Avons (juuunk), or Hoosiers, then they'll cycle out far before that.
