Brake pad suggestions?
It's time to replace the pads on the MINI and I'm not sure what to go with. I've hear good things about Hawk HPS and carbotech bobcats (I think), but that's it. Any suggestions and experience with these or other pads? These will be for road use with two or three mountain trips, maybe 1/2 dozen auto-x events, and (if my schedule allows) one or two HPDE events per year.

Also, the path the pads cover on the discs are worn about 2-3 mm deep; how deep can it wear before they should be replaced?

Carbotech fan here, though I'm not convinced either is up to track use - with your extensive autocross experience you should be quick enough to warrant some decent pads out of the box dunno I drove around everywhere on XP8s, they're not so hot natured that they wouldn't work well stone cold

that second half I've got no clue what you're trying to describe... try again, or post a pic Cool

I had the AX6 (panther plus) on my civic and liked them a lot for track but they only lasted me 7 months on the street. Then I had HP+ and liked them for the street. Worked pretty well for hard stops but about 3 months ago I went for a ride in a miata and after about 10 minuts of hard driving the HP+ were on fire.

rob, it should say in your service manual what the acceptable thickness of the rotor is. if not it might be available online, or even stamped somewhere on the rotor itself, check when you remove them.

I don't mind dust, I just don't want to have to explain to everyone that yes my brakes squeak; no, they aren't worn out.

the XP8s weren't too bad about squeal or anything - better than Pagids or Hawks Lol Lol

No I haven't, but I doupt that even you would admit that track would be harder on brakes than going down 151.

Carbotech Bobcats lasted me about 2.5 years, put XP8's on for a track day. Left them on for about a year (front's done, front right caliper froze), swapped back to the Bobcats for about 6 months and sold the car with plenty of brake life left.

HPS's last about 10 months on my TII, 2 autocross's and maybe a mountain run.

Done

they worked on my MR2 stone cold dunno

you gotta always grain-of-salt recommendations from people that don't have the same car as you though, too many variables... what do the Mini guys like?

Yours were fine because you were behind me on my stock miata pads. Remember I lit the factory civic pads on fire after about 5 turns on 151.

You'll need to get a micrometer on your rotor to determine if it needs to be replaced or not. European rotors are made out of a softer metal, should be cast iron iirc, than rotors on Japanese or Domestic cars and are designed to wear with the pads. The other feature of Euro rotors is that the softer metal gives better braking.
