Installing Autopower U-Weld kit
Hi All, Long time no post!
I'll cut right to the chase here. I am building a lemons car and ordered an Autopower U-Weld kit (i.e a pile of bent tubing) Here is my situation: We have a guy to do the welding. He's a proffessional welder and does stellar work by all accounts. He has never build a cage before though. So What I am looking for is a guide to what makes a cage "Legal". So things like, Weld requirements, Where the backing plates need to be, how the backing plates need to be welded down, space between bars and body panels... Things like this so I can direct someone who may be a good welder but not know about cages specifically. Thanks guys!

walks you through how they tech and what they look for. I'd also look at their rulebook to make sure what you're doing is above minimums and such. NASA and SCCA CCRs would also be good to look at, most of the cage rules in the US are copied from one of those two orgs (and I think NASA even copied SCCA's as a basis when they started back in the day so.. )I didn't see spave between bars and body panels addressed but that's going to be tough to change with a kit anyway. But you do want them as tight against the body as you can get - moves the items farther away from the driver (safer) and if you can get it to where they're all wedged in there pretty good it'll increase rigidity/performance to boot. ![]() ex-CSCC President, Vice President and Secretary, member 2001-2006 "Zoom Zoom Zoom - On any given weekend more Mazdas make optimistic pass attempts than any other brand!" |

Send your shortest person through tech in the car.
Though it would be wise to get the seat mounted low enough that you've got plenty of room anyway... ![]() ex-CSCC President, Vice President and Secretary, member 2001-2006 "Zoom Zoom Zoom - On any given weekend more Mazdas make optimistic pass attempts than any other brand!" |
