RE: 2011 NCAC Registration open 10/1 & 2 Zmax Dragway
I'm down if you can clear one thing up for me...what the heck is the SCCA's problem with painter's tape? This is one thing that baffles my mind. Someone really decided they would rather have me tape a piece of paper to the side of my car rather than tape a number on there? I understand that they can be unreadable...so tell the people that are too lazy to put up legible numbers to try again before they pass tech. Am I missing some safety issue here? Is the tape too light and does it give one an unfair advantage? What's the deal?

I usually get the "speech" in tech, but at the last michellin event they made me take off my 1.5" wide bright blue tape because it was on a black car. I buy the green gorilla stuff from now on. I don't ever want to sit in tech again and have to listen to the jerk telling me to hurry up. I can't help it that I use a lot of tape. Its probably an OCD thing. Rules are rules, I guess. <--this is an scca rant, nothing against hscc

Well, just like they have the option of making rules, I have the option of not going...I'll see if I can find/get an official answer before making that decision though.

Officers of Highlands were tired of trying to read incomprehensible letters and numbers on a speeding car, It is hard enough to see proper sized letters especially with 4 cars on the course. Plus our night series is in the dark, so that compounds the problem. We have been supplying printed out numbers and classes And tape to put them on with. So what is the complaint? We are not part of the SCCA but we use their rules as our rules.
Example trying to tell the difference in a tape "5" or is that an "S", "G or "6"

Thanks for asking the question, I hope this clarifies our take on the issue.

RE: 2011 NCAC Registration open 10/1 & 2 Zmax Dragway
It's just never been a problem for CSCC. We don't have "S" nearly as much as SCCA guys, so maybe that's it. Regardless, that still seems terribly nitpicky.

But it's Petit LeMans anyway, I didn't realize that...so I'm already busy :/

I might go for seat time. No idea what class I would be in now. What class would a CSP miata be in if it had no carpet?

Not having painters tape is a case of a few ruining it for everyone. Many cases you can read it without a problem, but then you get a few guys who do microscopic numbers on a rear quarter window. Or 1/2 inch blue tape on a black, actually 1/2 inch tape is tough to see regardless. Timing and scoring people do a lot of work at big events, so its alway nice to make their life a little easier.

RE: 2011 NCAC Registration open 10/1 & 2 Zmax Dragway
So if I get a couple of people to put their magnets on upside-down before tech, are they going to ban those too or just tell us to fix them? I see the reasoning, but it seems to me that some have forgotten that they have the authority to tell participants to fix the problem.

^^meh, I think you should just ban those drivers Tongue

Personally, I recommend anyone who is serious about autox to get permanent numbers. There are a lot of things that can be done in the time it takes to make numbers out of tape.

I'm not serious about autocross. Magnets tend to remove themselves from cars at track speed, so I'm wary of making that investment.

RE: 2011 NCAC Registration open 10/1 & 2 Zmax Dragway
Hrmmm, OK, then just use the supplied printed numbers if you go to an HSCC event. And use whatever is allowed for track days, for track days. No one's forcing you to buy anything, the local regions are just updating local rules to make running events easier and smoother. A simple solution was identified for a common problem, and it also takes any subjectiveness out of the decision if someones numbers are OK or not. The last thing an event chair wants to hear is someone coming up and whining that his tape artistry was rejected and tech, but another car was deemed OK.
They are also providing an option for those who don't want to invest in permanent numbers.
