clutch/ tranny and funny sounds
any ideas on how bad doing a hard pull or 2 before the 500 mile break in is? I just had mine replaced (CM fx200 clutch and flywheel) about 2-3k miles ago,(89k on the clock now) and ever since i had it installed (about 300 miles in) when the engine rpms are super low, and you accelerate, i get a chirping sound as if the clutch is slipping on the flywheel. (get the car going, clutch all the way out, break the car down almost till it shudders a lil, and when you step on the gas you get a chirp. most defined in reverse where the rpms regularly dip that low, only happens when the engine is being dubbed, so when you step on the gas you can feel the car shake a lil. once the rpms get above ~1000 it stops)
as i said i did ~2 hard pulls before 500 miles, but it was because i live off of a 50mph highway that everyone goes 60 on, and i have to make a turn on to a hill on the highway (going uphill) and the traffic moves fast and there are spans of 10 min that will pass without a large enough gap to slowly accelerate. could those pulls have caused this? or is this even something i should be worried about? I was told if you didnt break it in the only really bad thing that would happen would be the throw out bearing might chirp, but unless it chirps with the clutch all the way out, i am concerned as to the sound my car is making. also, ever since the clutch install, traction control kicks in around 5k rpms in 1st. I think its just my tires slipping due to the sub freezing temps (they are dunlop sp sport signatures (high performance all seasons)), but i thought id just throw that out there in case it was related. RE: clutch/ tranny and funny sounds
Any problems performance-wise? Any other symptoms other than the noise? Shaky clutch pedal or anything?
Most of my issues are master/slave cylinder and brake fluid related, my clutch pedal just doesn't like to come back up when I'm running consistently over 4k rpms at events like an autocross or hard driving in general. :-\ Not sure if i'd prefer your problem, but I'm guessing it might possibly be due to some dust getting between the clutch plate and the flywheel causing the noise? If this is so, it shouldn't be a big deal, but I'm no mechanic so don't take my word for it. ![]() Fear the Baby Goat CSCC Journalist (2010) CSCC Secretary (2010-2011) |

RE: clutch/ tranny and funny sounds
no real performance impact than im aware of, btu the clutch doesn't seem any gripper than the one i had in it before, and i believe it was the stock clutch.

RE: clutch/ tranny and funny sounds
i would recommend that shouldn't even have your clutch engaged below 1000 rpm in a small 4 cycl, exception may be weird reverse stuff. by dubbed i assume you are referring to lugged...or when the rpms are really low and the motor shakes like crazy....load at low RPM like this =really low oil pressure+high cylinder pressures= increased bearing wear...everyone does it but i have tired to stop doing it so much since my mechanic buddy said he can spot cars that have been lugged alot just from the bearing scars
if you can hear the chirping when the car is just sitting there idling with the clutch out it prob is the throw out bearing...volvo has had a bad one for like 2 years now and it sounds like there is loose change in the bell housing ![]() if its all good in the hood at higher RPM i would chalk it up too a little annoyance from an aftermarket mod...like the horrible noises my buddies 240 makes from the diff he has. 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon Manual Swap - C70 Wheels RICA tune - 16T @ 17psi Bikerack |

RE: clutch/ tranny and funny sounds
it could also be motor detonating/pre-ignition, or maybe the motor banging around the engine bay with the stock motor mounts,
engaging the clutch below 1000 rpm and lugging it aren't the samething. some cars idle as low as 500-600 rpm. lugging an engine = not downshifting when you are suppose to a handful of hard pulls won't do anything to a clutch if you are breaking it in. in general, only hard shifts and slipping the clutch excessively could possibly harm the clutch. 99 Neon R/T Coupe 98 Neon R/T Coupe 97 Neon ACR Sedan |

RE: clutch/ tranny and funny sounds
thats good to hear
, but no, unfortunately its not the motor mounts, i had all of them replaced about 1k miles ago when i had the clutch done.
