This is my first car a 1987 325. I had it from High School right up to my Senior year in College. It was a real tough car I drove from Kentucky to Mass. and from North Carolina to West Virginia and all across Virginia from mountains to coast. My Mom drove it with no oil one time and almost ruined the engine! But, somehow it survived! It even survived a collision with a fence which my brother hit while hydroplaning at 65mph down a country road. However time and wear and tear caught up with it and finally I needed to trade it in for something more reliable. aka the 330i I drive now.

Hey guys,

We may not have mentioned this before, but we had discussed putting a car in the First Friday Parade. It would be a great way to get the club out there (and to a lesser extent to show off your sweet ride to a bunch of chicks ). It's in no way mandatory, but it's something we would like to happen. If you are SERIOUSLY interested and can do this tomorrow night, post your name and phone number ASAP. I'll call you tomorrow before 3 and let you know what to do. Thanks guys!

Ideas for a custom gauge cluster?

After Ted's post here (and after the gauges which came in won't work because I can't find an adapter to make a 1/2" NPT sensor go into my coolant line anywhere) I've started rethinking my gauge idea.

I feel like I don't really need to know exactly the oil pressure or water temp (or even the exact engine speed) while I'm on track, I only need to know either that it's in usable range or it's not. I started thinking about what I would like in my ideal gauge cluster and came to an idea of how to do it, but it requires quite a bit of electrical work and programming - it's been a couple years since I did something similar but I know I can pull this off. It may take a while, but this will likely be a winter project.

That said, I've been trying to think of what I want this cluster to look like; what information I want available to me on track so I know what parameters I'll need to measure. My thought is this:
- use about 7 LEDs for the tachometer function (lowest one does not light up at 0 rpm, rather they only light up when in the usable power band so I can quickly know where in my power band I am)
- Digital readout for speed - I don't want to have to look down and try to decipher in my mind what the needle pointing at a certain point translates into when I'm going into a turn
- stock fuel gauge - I don't want to deal with installing an aftermarket fuel level sender unit
- Warning lights for oil pressure and water temp that come on solid when in the "might want to watch it" level, flash when in the "DANGER" mode

Layout would probably be something like the "tachometer" at the top, centered, with the "speedometer" centered in the cluster directly below that. The stock fuel gauge would go bottom left corner (where it is now) and warning lights would go across the bottom of the cluster.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

So on the caesar's head run the other day, my pads started fading pretty quickly. I know Ford brakes are terrible, but my 3-year-old fluid and duralast pads aren't helping matters. So for monthly autocrosses, occasional mountain runs and daily commuting to school, what say you?

I've heard that hawk hps are good but overheat pretty easily, hp+ is better but dust alot, and carbotech xr6 are awesome but need some heat before they work. Keep in mind my car is 3300lbs and has tiny 11" single-piston front brakes. Upgrading to the cobra 13" rotor + dual piston caliper is an option, though that's quite a bit more expensive.

D16a6: I/H/E - Pump Gas vs E85 Dyno Tune

This car belongs to Marc from Simpsonville. He brought the car in last night for a tune on 93 Octane, and then a tune on E85.

Marc uses this car to compete in SCCA STS class races, so the engine is essentially stock, due to classing rules, with a few bolt on parts. Since rules on power modifications are so strict, he wanted to convert to E85 to gain any available horsepower. Marc competes on a National level in this car, and is currently ranked 3rd in the nation in his class.

Since he will be driving the car to all events, he wanted a 93 Octane map, as well as the E85 map, since E85 may not be accessible in all areas.

Here is the setup:

Stock D16a6
AEM Cold Air Intake
Custom Header (Made by Ari)
2 1/2" Exhaust, through a Burns Stainless Muffler

Stock fuel pump
Stock injectors

Tuned on Zdyne (Usually we recommend converting to OBD1, but due to class rules, Marc needed to run the OEM ECU.)

Here is the chart. The brown line is from the 93 Octane tune, and the green line is from the E85 tune. Notice that there are gains through out the powerband, resulting in around a 5% gain in peak power and torque.

The D16a6 is a low compression, low HP engine. Still, good power gains were had from simply swapping fuels and re-tuning. In a high compression, or boosted application, E85 will allow the tuner more freedom with ignition timing, allowing your engine to produce more power, with less risk of damage to the engine.
