Hey all

So my tires are getting to be a bit low (another thing to add to my list roll ) and will probably going to be need replacing soon. I drove my stang maybe 3000 miles last year, and I plan to attend all of CSCC's autocrosses. I wanted to get Kumho XS tires, for their price and good performance, but they suck in the wet so I've been looking at the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec *breath* Similar pricing, similar dry performance, and the dunlops are pretty significantly better in the wet (I just dont want to skid off the road driving down the freeway).

Thoughts? As little as I drive I don't think it's worth it at this point to get an extra set of rims and tires to DD on.
I can't speak from experience, but I have read and heard from several people that they are decent autox tires to run. I think Rob Fogle has those on his miata so look for his thoughts on the tires.
the Dunlop is a pretty decent tire, alot of autoxers and LeMons racers pick those

the XS will certianly fit the bill, might not be the absolute fastest but could be more durable maybe?

XS has 9/32 of tread and 180 treadwear rating
Direzza has 10/32 and 200 treadwear rating.
If i'm reading this right, wouldnt that lead one to believe the dunlop would be more durable? I'm not worried as much about top line performance as safety... I dont want to be hydroplaning down the freeway.
Make sure you realize that the tread wear rating is only comparable in a brand of tires. Somehow no one thought it to be a good idea to make the ratings comparable for every tire no matter what brand.
I've heard good things about the Z1 Star Specs. They are comparable to RE01r's.
What size tires are you looking for? Somehow I inadvertently started a tire business in my garage!
That'd be helpful, haha

245/45/17
treadwear ratings are barely consistent within the same tire mfg - good luck comparing between different mfgs Lol

if you're worried about hydroplaning slow down in the rain Tongue
Yea wet isn't something I would be worried about. I have my RE-01R's at the wear bars now and if it is wet, they still grip awesome. If there is standing water I just slow down a bunch. I doubt many people on here would drive hard when there is standing water all over.
Alright, that sounds good... I guess I"m just kind of scarred from my drive back from charlotte last january. crappy tires, crappy steering linkage, POURING rain, big rigs... scariest drive of my life.

I've got a post up on corral.net so we'll see what they suggest. Do you use your re01-r's for daily driving? How long did they last?

C&D likes the dunlops

EDIT:
How about Hankook Ventus R-S2
On sale at tire rack for $71 each...

EDIT AGAIN
$71 was just too hard to pass up, and they seem to perform really well. got 4 at 245/45/17. i suppose wally world can mount them well enough eh?
I do not DD on my RE-01R's except for about 2 weeks during an autocross. Right now I have them on because I had a flat in one of my normal tires. I have had the RE-01R's for 2 years now and they are still awesome. I recently found out about hot the RS-2's are on sale. I think to get rid of the old stock before the RS-3's come in. I like the RS-2's. For tire for DD and going quick.
I didn't get to autocross on Direzzas but for track use I think the grip is comparable to the RS-2s, which I love for the price. I've autocrossed and tracked the RS-2s. I only did one event on the Dunlops and several on the RS-2s, but the Dunlops seemed to show more wear after one event than the Hankooks. For similar money I'd buy the Hankooks again, but I think the Direzzas are a pretty good tire also.

As far as tire reviews go...if you're trying to choose a tire for a competition, I wouldn't bother with advice that didn't involve a good driver and a timed lap, preferably in the type of competition you're interested in running. I'd tend to look more to a magazine like GRM than C&D. Even then...unless you're into blazing new trails, look at what the guys beating you are using Lol
Well RS-2's are half the price of Direzzas so I ordered them Smile Should be getting here next week. Could have them on in time for our run down to Commerce, but I need to burn off my old ones first Tongue

And I consistently beat a supercharged miata with re-01r's this summer... in a stock miata with factory (140,000 miles old) suspension and 400-treadwear-rated all season tires. doesnt mean my all seasons were amazing (they sucked) but i get what you mean Tongue
You'll like them. I am probably going to have them in the CRX once I have more money.

I have the RE-01R's on my miata without a super. BRING IT!!, Lol
