Team Subarjew in 24 out of 98....
Good to hear!
I heard 22nd from Mike C. (running Timing) after he came down from the tower last night. I might have mis-reported to the SubarJew guys that they were 24th earlier.

They peaked at 18th earlier in the day, a penalty combined with some of the penalized teams digging out of their lap deficits to put them down to 40th but they bottomed out there and good driving, excellent reliability and attrition of the competition buoyed them back up.

Unfortunately Jim's car, the Pink Panther II (1988 Honda Prelude), developed a severe knock of some sort just a short while (few dozen laps). I think they were only into their third driver when it happened. They spent the next few hours trying to track down an engine but couldn't find a junkyard that was both open on Saturday, and had a carb'd 2.0S model. I suggested trying either the Si (fuel injected) model's engine with the carb manifold or looking into an Accord engine, but at least the Accord engine was a bad idea as I just found from a few minutes of online research. The S-to-Si swap is common in Preludes but requires ECU and harness swap plus other stuff, and the answer as to whether the manifolds can be swapped is a bit hazy, there was a suggestion of using the FI manifold on a carb'd engine in some post I found and they mentioned having to do something with oil cooler lines and manifold coolant passages that one had, and the other didn't...anyway it would be a sketchy proposition at best and they didn't feel like dumping any money into the car, that's against the whole point of the event!

Lots of other cool cars to look at: a tinfoil-coated Camaro, various Miatas and E30s that everyone accuses of cheating Lol a 280ZX that burst into flames, a Toyota hatchback that flipped over completely (no injury!) and lots more.

Just found out from Mike that SubarJew finished 21st overall...pretty good for a twice-totaled station wagon Cool
Awesome! must have been a lot of fun.
Holy crap that's a lot of cars on track ! ! ! !
Nice to see the Pink Panther settled down and reproduced.

Infant death cry some of the guys didn't even get to drive. Coming to the event with a complete parts car looks like the way to go.
CONGRATS TO ALL DRIVERS OF SUBARJEW!!!!!

Way to go guys...that is AWESOME!!! Enjoyed watching the show on live feed... look forward to more pictures when you have recuperated!!!

Enjoy the break and relax! You worked hard, you drove hard, you repped us well.

THANKS! Proud of you all.
Ted
Great news! Hope the car is enough one piece to show at the car show. I think The Tiger and other media would be interested to do an article on it.
damn i wish i hadn't of read that..we all thought we had squeezed into the top 20. But i am still damn happy, awesome finish for all our of first attempts at wheel to wheel, and for khanh only his 2nd time on a track, the first was on friday....we are pumped to return in sept and see what we can do

but to our credit one of us (me) forgot to reattached the front sway bar after test fitting the other springs....so we ran the whole race with out the front sway bar working...well from the looks of right front control it might of kinda worked in the one left corner as it wedged itself into the control arm and left marks...but this of course is only because the RF control arm is really bent into a weird position from one of the earlier crashes...but thats another story

iam tired, more thought tomorrow.

oh and thanks to everyone that helped, we got lots of compliments on how the car looked and how fast it was
"cheater" E30 is the way to go wink
must've been the paint-job Tongue

Congratulations guys! 21st overall rocks! That's really great.

Well that was a long but exciting weekend!

First and foremost I want to sincerely thank everyone who helped us out during the preparation for this race and at the race itself. Big ups especially to James, Ted, and Doug. Without your help, we would have been severely lacking in one or more aspects. You all are great friends and if you need anything ever, do not hesitate to ask.

Secondly, I just want to say that I am amazed that we made it and finished as well as we did when we weren't even trying to finish well. No one on our team has ever done any wheel to wheel racing and one member did his first ever track day the day before the event. We were definitely in over our heads, but with some cool heads and some consistent driving we were able to make it through rather well.

In list form, here are the things that went against our finish during the weekend:
  1. We did 30 minute driver changes to make sure everyone got the same amount of driving time in because we thought we were not going to go the distance. This, obviously, was a lot of time spent in the pits.
  2. Day 1 we got one black flag because the inexperienced member of our team drove off of the track while driving in his mirrors. We got a chicken welded to our roof (I later painted it gold). This dropped us from 18th to 40th...
  3. Day 2, we got two black flags and neither was our fault. The first one occured because there was a 3 car wreck in front of us that we were not a part of. The corner thought we were even though we were a couple car lenghs back. For this penalty, our team got our legs taped together and we had to go find the judges some coffee and oj. We dropped to high twenties at that point after clawing our way back.
  4. The second black flag was from the dirver of the lead car, a Saab, getting loose heading into a corner when we were already cornering, sliding sideways, and hitting us in front of our rear wheel. Ben had to stand on the top of the car with a bottle and pacifier for this one, even though it wasn't his fault.

Also, I was so worried about the brakes not lasting that I was very stern in my advice that we try to conserve them as much as possible. Turns out that the were pretty bulletproof as we found out near the end of the second day. Also, when I say bulletproof, this does not include the fact that the shitty ebay SS brake lines we got leaked fluid around the crush washers, so we had to refill brake fluid twice over the course of the weekend. Luckily, the leak was so slow that it really didn't affect anything.

Despite all I have already said, there are so many more stories to tell, but I will leave you all with a simple list for now. Top ten things we learned to do when we bring the car back in September:

  1. Bring more than two driver suits. Normally, this scenario is tolerable, but when one of your teammates is a REALLY REALLY sweaty Jew (par for the course when it comes to Jews), things get interesting.
  2. Wet sand the car. When your paint has the texture of a shark's skin, nothing, and I mean nothing, will stick to it.
  3. A zip tied Moses on the roof rack is a nice touch, but he really needs a buddy Christ as a companion.
  4. When they say no race motors before 12:00, they are definitely referring to a 96 Legacy Wagon with a Meinke-welded OBX muffler.
  5. Get car aligned before-hand. When a circle track team feels bad for you with how you are aligning the car and loans you toe plates and a plumb bob, you know your bungee cord, angle iron, tape measure, wood, weights, and itouch level were supppeeeerrrrr ghetttooooo.
  6. Check front suspension. While our disconnected swaybar didn't help, the feeling that the suspension was ripping itself off of the car near the end of the race when you used the brakes made for some really interesting moments.
  7. Do not get black flagged unless you know they are going to weld the humping bunnies to your roof. The chicken was cool, but nothing beats humping bunnies.
  8. When your camping area is more luxurious than your motel in Kershaw, you know you were doing it wrong.
  9. Bribe judges with bag of jew gold from around neck. If they say that everyone knows that Jew's keep a fake bag of gold around their neck in order to hide the real bag of gold... give them Goldschlager
  10. And finally, when your pitpoard is so small that you have to paint it gold... packaging tape it to a piece of wood you painted gold... packaging tape that to a jack handle.... and place that in a jack handle expension.... you might want to invest in a bigger board.

To which I would add: can opener.

Also, maybe don't let Shaun light your campfire. Lighter fluid can get 'spensive. twisted
