Don't get me wrong - it looks really good when wheels are "flush" with the fenders. However, this business of running a 235 series tire on a 10.5" rim with a +22 offset looks retarded. Not to mention how stupid it looks when people are running more than -5 degrees of chamber. I find it more silly when people are running a staggered wheel setup on a FWD car.
If you pause the video at 1:54 you'll see what I mean. That's pointless. Give it another 6 months and this "fad" will go away like altezza lights/neons/vynal graphics/and absurd body kits.
To each his own though....

Loved the video. I for one am a big fan of the old school german tuck look. Its something about that works so well with German cars especially older Mark 1 VW's, Rado's, Rocco's, etc. Its not a performance thing which a lot of people don't seem to understand. And a lot of those cars run a bagged suspension so you CAN raise the car if needed.

Not so much performance ( which may sound dumb to some) but its al about how the car sits.
Thats why id love a bagged mk3 for a daily driver! but i dont have the money08-30-2010, 03:03 PM
Andrew you gring up a good point in my head. I really do not like the german tuck slammed thing at all, but I do like the Japanese VIP look. Strange.
I think it is the streched tire thing that kills it for me. Stance is fine, just the tire thing I don't like.

a little stretch is fine, but otherwise it gets ridiculous. I like the look of a car that is lowered well. not necessarily oil-pan scraping, just a good height that has the wheels fitting the wheelwells right.

Some European cars look cool low, but I'll say, having a low car might seem cool, but eventually your back, having to deal w/ any reasonable transition, your gf etc.. start telling you maybe "in the middle" is better than 2 inches off the ground.
As far as stretched tire, I never quite got it besides the idea that your trying to get away with a narrower tire (i.e. usually cheaper) on a wide ass rim. Style wise I still don't think it looks good. Just my opinion though.

my understanding was mild tire stretch was good bc it creates a taut sidewall to eliminate tire squirm. however, a 205 on a 9" wide rim is a little excessive, if not dangerous imo.

For me it's about both.
Style and Functionality go hand in hand if you like how racecars look.
More tire as long as it isn't in sidewall is usually a good thing performance wise, up to 17-18 inches. Filling out the fenders to the max and having the car low are two aspects of running an aggressive suspension and wheel and tire setup, generally one suited to go fast.
