This was a recent accident. There is video somewhere of it as well. Accident happened right on the front straightaway coming out of the last corner. Guy looked to be running the right line when the car just went sideways. Perhaps they had a rain earlier and the curbing was still a bit slippy.
From what I read, the driver is alive but in critical condition with heavy burns. The video shows how long it took emergency crews to reach the driver. Only corner workers were on the scene for the first couple of minutes with wimpy fire extinguishers. Took them two full minutes to pull him out of that car.

That is completely unacceptable.
Horrifying...
Agreed. I can't believe they could just stand there and watch him burn. "Here, we will spray water on you and hope you are still alive to pull you out later"
WTF
even though i do agree that it is a appalling thing to see a man stay in a burning car that long... if i was a corner worker with a fire extinguisher i wouldn't exactly jump in there to save him until the flames were suppressed to a point that i could get to him without myself being consumed. the driver is in a fire-retardant suit.. and while that may serve as nothing else but an oven for his body to cook in.. he at least has a better chance than someone running in wearing a uniform made of synthetic non-fire-retardant materials. natural fibers will burn in contact with flame.. but ignition temperature tends to be higher still than most synthetics. also.. synthetics have a tenancy to melt to the skin. making them impossible to remove without taking the skin with it. i think that even though they didn't do as well as they could have... the main problem relies in the response time of the fire team with fire retardant suits and gas masks and at least the corner workers were smart enough to focus almost all of the extinguishers on the driver until he could be safely pulled from the car.
and no offence. but id rather spray the guy with water attempting to reduce the flames to a point at chich it would be possible to safely pull him out rather than have people rush in too soon and then be stuck with the headline "two burnt alive trying to save race-car driver who eventually gets pulled from the burning car and is recovering in a hospital"
sory if this picks a bone with anyone.. but go to the burn-unit in regional hospital and you will see just why i would never go into a raging fire. the smell of BURNING human flesh is something your brain never gets used too, and you can never block it out.
that's a good point of view...
unless... you are the guy burning in the car...
That was nearly complete fuel dump... The flames on the back side of the car are of no consequence... focus all the might on the driver and get him out.
