Full Version: Would you reuse this rod?

Left rod is the one in question. The one on the right is for comparison.

My concern is the heat tinting. I am seeing some on the top and the bottom of the journal. Let me know if you think i should reuse it or replace it with another used unit.
Have you checked it for out of round with a dial bore gauge?

Do you have any way to get a hardness measurement? The Clemson materials lab could probably strike it for you, or any other local tool manufacturer. If you are really interested in having this done, let me know and I can help.

I would doubt the blued surfaces on the rod approached annealing temperatures (despite the presence of bluing) but if you have another easily accessible, better safe than sorry.

How'd that happen?

+1 Id. be concerned with the bearings and the crank. That heat was coming from somewhere.

I had some mad rod knock coming back from the dragon a while back and parked it in highlands and towed it back the rest of the way. Got it apart a few weeks after i got it back and one of the rod bearings was pulverized. Needless to say the rod was shot and so was the crank. Got a replacment crank and a used rod/piston for that cylinder. Recently i started cleaning off the rest getting them ready for new rings and noticed the heat tinting on this one. The bearing looked good but not perfect. The bearing has some shiny streaks but nothing i would have freeked out about, but deffinetly trash worthy. I would have never expected that much heat to have been generated from a bearing that looked the way it did.

Any who, my guess is since i had it at high rpm's and load on the way up and for about 8 runs while i was there, that i ended up starving the bottom end of oil from two things, being a qt low and improper block ventilation.

Ill probly just trash it, I cant afford to throw the price of rebuilding it away on having a rod out of spec. Ill get it checked out for shits and giggles though. I have heard of many cases of people using tinted rods sucessfully (this isnt a race car, just a daily driver) but i still dont feel like running the risk.

the oil clearance on that rod bearing by the time i took it apart must have been over 1/16" Lol

After seeing the bearing, nd anyI'm gonna go ahead and say that the rod is out of round. If the clearance was that loose, then it was knocking around anyways.
Thats not the bearing from the rod in question. Thats the one that caused me to rebuild it. I am obviously not using that rod again.

I guess i need to ask another question... are rods in honduh engines tempered? Cause if so, its deffinetly not anymore.
1/16" is nothing, LOL
I spun a cam bearing on one of the camaros and drove it home from Greer, mind you, right after a cam swap (dang LT1s) and at tear down the crank on one journal it was like an 1/8th. But did beat a 'stang from a light on the way home...HA!!

Not really trying up one up here, just sympathizing with you on what happened. Good luck with putting it back together.
Wish I still had my main caps that I ore about 1/8" off. Lol

If you plan on building motors more than once every long while, I'd invest in a dial bore gauge.
Wow guys, your crazy. I am now on my 7th engine and i still cant justify buying any tools for doing any measuring. Much easier and cheaper just getting people to do it for me. Ill just throw the rod.

Should have the rebuild done here in a few weeks, hopefully before the next school semester, i cant afford gas mileage in any other car but my honda Lol
