Since there are so many z owners on here and since i would probably get more flaming than answers on my350z I come here to ask this.
I bought the car with 12k on it. Motor sounded wonderful. It has 25k on it now. 3 oil changes. I always check often and it barely burns any oil. I do drive it ruff. (fairly often up to 6/7k.) Shifting is getting hard to do so i had the oil changed in the tranny last oil change. (I cant even change my own anymore.)
You know when you drive past a pos and you hear fuel injectors/ticking noise? I have it on the z. Even tracy who knows nothing about cars noticed it. Heavier on one side than the other. Any idea what it could be? I can grab a video tomorrow if you are curious. I just hope this isnt yet another shitty thing to happen to me this year. (oil is synthetic mobil one.) Do the cam chains need tensioning or anything like that on these cars? You can also hear it over the muffler bypass. the noise does increase in speed proportionate to engine rpm.
Also, when the motor is cold i have to double clutch to get it into second or third. (only since the oil was changed, and cold at night is 60 degrees around here.) Thinking this is the throwout bearing going out...
its a 2k6 so i might possibly still have some powertrain warranty left.
2006 is the POS rev-up motor?
The cam chains don't have a tensioner. The timing chain has one, its on the passenger side, near where the PS bracket mounts up. The VQ engines are shim and bucket engines, so it can't be valve noise. Can you pinpoint the area? Do you have a stethoscope?
... And on the shifting issue, what oil did you use?

not sure what they used, but i remember them chatting about the type.
Sounds like they put the wrong shit in... (was a havoline lube place.)
I can go pick up a stethoscope. Ill try get video later today of the noise.
Dave, the rev up engines are not all pos. I have had no issues with oil consumption. This is my first issue, and I am hoping its just me being paranoid. This is not the time to have to replace the engine. If I had kept my job, I would have seriously be considering getting a beater (for ohio) and putting an ls2 in... gah
May want to go ahead and change that fluid. Sounds like you have the wrong weight. You should have 75w90.
Let me know on the noise. I'd be glad to listen to it for you.
videos are uploading to utub. (*.avi isnt supported by photobucket.)
going to be 30 min or so before they load.
(one of the tick, the other of just how loud my clutch is...)
Using the video the noise appears to be loudest by my throttle body. (back of the motor).
I am wondering if the noise isnt my throw out bearing just completely dieing on me.
excuse the funky colors, camera decided it was to be on color accent and it picked blue.

Isn't power/drivetrain 5yrs/60k? I got my transmission replaced at ~56k.

undercat, Ill try take it in tomorrow and ask them what they think.
was hoping someone else would have an idea.
Dont want to seem like the crazy guy that randomly shows up and asks to check on engine noise. (especially since i feel like they will tell me my exhaust cutout/washers before the muffler is teh noise...)
I dont have another vehicle if they do decide to replace anything. Ill just be SOL. (or drive the fiancee to work for a few days and steal hers, but she will not be pleased about it.)
OK, the engine tick doesn't sound too serious too me, and I've had several VQ cars. My last red one knocked like hell when I'd start it, but I never really worried about it.
The transmission is deff not right. There is something going on there. VQ's are sorta known for having a rattle at idle, but that's serious.
^and screw the guys at the dealership. So what if they think you're crazy. You paid a lot of money for that car and warranty. I'd take it in EVERYTIME that it sounded odd.
Ok soon as I get a chance to get rid of my muffler bypass. And bolt on my sc plate I will go in. At least get it looked at before powertrain warranty ends.
For a large warranty job that would required more that a few hours of work, the dealership should provide you with a free rental car (think POS and most likely not even a nissan), for the time it takes to complete the work. If they don't outright offer one, you should request they provide one. And so long as you make a claim about an issue before your warranty is up, you can take it in afterwards and have it documented that you brought it in originally under warranty.
And like Spent said, I wouldn't worry about what anyone there thinks. Take advantage of your warranty while you can. I've got 128k on mine and I don't have any ticks or abnormal noises like that. And I've had pretty much every part replaced that there was a TSB on that I could (nothing on the engine though since mine is an '03).

Never had any ticking noises in mine for the first 50K.
IMO... straight to the dealership. Make it look as stock as possible and take it in. Try to be as nice as possible to the service guy and try to make friends there. I knew my guy on a first name basis and he always stuck his neck out to get mine fixed EVERY time i took it in.
As far as transmission goes... they know that its a weak link and will probably put a new one in without much trouble. Go for a test drive having them drive it and you in the passenger seat. And if they do replace it, have them put a new throwout bearing in while they are there. Just buy it from them and they most likely wont charge you any labor.
If all goes as planned, their mentality is to replace it if its broken (they dont like trying to tune/fix things) and might just give you a new short block and transmission. Its high hopes but it worked for me. ha
just let me state that the transmission is perfect once its warmed up.
I will put her back into shape tomorrow and take her in.

wish me luck.
Which tranny do you have? If its a CD01, theyre going to replace it with no problem. If it already had a CD09, it's going to be a little harder to get it swapped out. The CD01 trans had some issues but was only found in the earlier Z's. not sure what year yours is. Good luck.
